One DSLR Camera, Two AF Systems

Welcome to a new level of flexibility. The full-frame D780 features a dedicated, fast hybrid AF system for Live View shooting, as well as a fast and reliable phase-detection AF system for shooting in the viewfinder. In Live View, the high-precision AF system gives you 273 on-sensor AF points and eye detection AF. When shooting through the viewfinder, you can utilize Nikon's powerful 51-point AF system with its iconic tracking capabilities.

Shooting AF through the viewfinder

The 51-point phase-detection AF system has sensitivity down to -3 EV, while the bright optical viewfinder enables sharp, real-time confirmation of the action it frames. Follow subjects at high speed, even in low light.

Always blocked

During viewfinder shooting, the 51-point AF system lets you adapt instantly with quick switching between advanced AF modes. Benefit from rapid acquisition and amazing background isolation with group-area AF mode.

Catch the eye

When capturing still images in Live View mode, the Super Intelligent Hybrid AF system with Eye Detection AF can lock onto the subject's eyes and stay locked. Whether you are alone or a face in a crowd. Select which eye to focus on from the multi selector and the camera will maintain focus even when the subject is constantly moving.

Are you shooting in extreme weather conditions or in bright city lights at night? The various metering and white balance modes allow you to respond quickly to changes in natural light or high contrast situations.

Strong light or low light

The ISO range of 100-51,200, expandable up to 204,800 and up to ISO 50, allows you to adapt instantly to changes in light. Get rich tones in bright sunlight. Reveal details and nuances in low light.

Film the way action demands

The D780 uses the resolution of the 6K image sensor to produce ultra-high resolution 4K / UHD footage at 30p / 25p / 24p with zero crop factor. You can record full-definition slow-motion footage in-camera at up to 120p with audio. Also, you can record footage in DX format at 50p / 60p frame rates. AF speed and AF tracking can be adjusted while recording, and there are four AF area modes for movies.

Preserve up to 12 stops of dynamic range for more flexibility when editing and processing color grading. N-Log recording at a large 10-bit depth allows you to retrieve 4 times more information than with a standard 8-bit recording.

In-camera time-lapse video

You can create spectacular 4K / UHD time-lapse videos right in-camera. Exposure smoothing reduces variation between images for seamless transitions. Silent interval shooting counteracts mechanical blur and shutter noise. Low light metering can be expanded to -3 EV, while shutter speed can be extended to 900 s.
