Backlit 42.4 MP full-frame sensor
35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor features 42.4-megapixel resolution, gapless backlighting and on-chip lens design for outstanding sensitivity and dynamic range, anti-reflective (AR) coating on glass sensor sealing and other innovations that unleash the power of the sensor to create realistic looking images.
Image processor with more improvements
The latest large-scale initial integration makes reading data from the image sensor approximately twice as fast, and the BIONZ X image processor is now approximately 1.8 times faster. Improved image processing reduces noise and increases dynamic range over a wide sensitivity range of up to ISO 32,000 (standard ISO, expandable to ISO 50-102,400 for stills). Additionally, updated detail reproduction and zone-specific Noise Canceling achieve noise reduction (roughly equivalent to one stop) at mid-range ISO settings. The reproduction of skin color has also been dramatically improved, which is advantageous for shooting portraits. The α7R III also supports 14-bit RAW output even during silent shooting / continuous shooting.
A giant leap in autofocus performance
The α9 camera's improved image processing system and autofocus algorithms optimized for the α7R III improve autofocus speed, precision and tracking performance. 399-point phase-detection AF and 425-point contrast-detection AF offer wide, high-density coverage. Up to approximately 2x faster autofocus speed and 2x more accurate autofocus tracking performance let you capture and maintain focus on wildlife that moves unpredictably. The α7R III also automatically focuses at brightness up to EV-3.
Eye AF with doubled tracking performance
Enhanced Eye AF precision, plus twice the autofocus speed and autofocus tracking performance help you easily take a portrait of a moving subject using AF-C even during continuous shooting, and even if the subject is looking downward or not looking at the camera, or is backlit with the face in partial darkness. The α7R III's E-mount body is compatible with Eye AF for A-mount lenses mounted via an adapter.
Up to 10fps with AF / AE tracking
Thanks to new improvements to the shutter unit and image processing system, the α7R III allows continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with AF / AE tracking (up to 8 fps with minimal lag in Live View continuous shooting mode ), allowing easy and steady shooting of even very active subjects. An electronic shutter enables silent, vibration-free shooting of wildlife when even the slightest noise can mean missing an ideal shot.
Focal plane phase detection AF compatible with A-mount lenses
Phase detection AF can work even when an A-mount lens is attached to the α7R III with an LA-EA3 adapter that does not include a dedicated phase detection AF sensor. The 399-point focal plane phase-detection AF system offers wide coverage, fast response, and high tracking performance with either an A-mount or E-mount lens attached.
Up to 76 images in continuous shooting
Increased internal memory and system speed, and UHS-II compatibility allow the α7R III to capture up to approximately 28 uncompressed RAW images or 76 compressed RAW or JPEG images in a continuous burst at 10 fps. You can access the Fn menu and the menu screen, change settings, and review playback while writing data. During playback, a countdown of the number of remaining photos to be written to memory is displayed on the screen.
Fluorescent and artificial light flicker is automatically detected and the shutter release is synchronized to minimize its effect on photos. This eliminates exposure and color anomalies at the top and bottom of images captured with a high shutter speed, as well as inconsistencies between continuous shots, so you can shoot indoors with more confidence.
AF-ON button and multi selector
The AF-ON button activates autofocus without the need to press the shutter button halfway, so you can better focus on the exact point where the shutter triggered and capture the moment immediately. A multi selector allows you to change the focus point quickly and efficiently. You can intuitively select and change the focus point, so you don't miss out on good opportunities to capture moving subjects.
5-axis image stabilization on the body with shutter speed advantage of up to 5.5 stops
Now more efficient than ever for the α series, this comprehensive system compensates for the five types of camera shake that tend to cause image blur: longitudinal / side shake when shooting at longer focal lengths; X / Y shake in close-up capture (including macro); and roll vibration when capturing photos at night and recording movies. This system achieves a shutter speed 5.5 stops faster, with which the α7R III can take full advantage of its 42.4 megapixels and its Live View image performance. Additionally, it works with A-mount lenses attached via a mount adapter, in addition to E-mount lenses.
AE precision true to the photographer's intentions
A 1,200 segment Live View Exposure Analysis ensures accurate color measurement and analysis. The focus information from the lens maintains consistency of autofocus control and image brightness, even when the position of the subject or the brightness of the background changes. The full-screen bright spot and average bright spot metering modes are now joined with the α7R III's multi-segment, center-weighted, and spot metering modes When the Focus Area parameter is set to Flexible Spot or Extended Flexible Spot, the metering point can be linked to the focus area.
The Multi Capture function with Pixel Shift open a new world of resolution
By applying image stabilization control technology and mechanisms, this new feature composes four independent pixel shift images containing total data equal to approximately 169.6 million or 42.4 million x 4 (RGGB) pixels, in order to reproduce a single optimal photo with super high resolution, detailed textures, balanced color and realistic atmosphere, with the minimum of moiré and color artifacts. Images captured with this function can be processed with Sony's new suite of imaging software.
Two slots with UHS-II compatibility
This camera has two media slots for SD card (UHS-II compliant for fast data writing) and SD / MS card, respectively. The two cards in the slots can be used to simultaneously record or delay data recording; separate RAW data from JPEG data, or photos from movies; and copy data from one card to another. The memory card cover can be locked to prevent it from being opened unintentionally.
Touchscreen LCD for intuitive focus operation
A 3.0-type LCD touch screen with 1.44 million dots makes focus actuation intuitive and immediate. You can simply touch the screen to specify the desired focus point using touch focus. Additionally, the touch pad function lets you drag the focus frame to another point with one finger on the LCD screen while monitoring the shot through the viewfinder.
